A to-do list helps us through our daily challenges. But for the broader demands ahead in the New Year, you may want to consider a “to become” List.
The idea is advanced on Smart Blogs by executive coach Mary Jo Asmus, who believes your ability to respond to change and sustain your leadership over time requires you to persistently “become” a better leader through improving the behaviours that allow you to lead at your best.
I thought this was good advice. So I am sitting down to add to my list of things to do, and re-framing some of them as things I want to become. So, rather than "exercising 5 days a week", I am aiming to "becoming physically fit", with some specific measures. Rather than "preparing 3 new tools for clients", I am aiming to "become more expert" in an area of interest - with whatever that involves, which could include preparing new tools - or not.
May you become the person you want to be in 2014 (if you aren't already there).
